THE STORY BEHIND THE SONGBy Christian Balderas
“It starts with Isaiah the prophet, who wrote: ‘Listen! I am sending my messenger ahead of you and he will prepare your way!’ ” - Mark 1:2 (TPT)
I believe the first line in this song is arguably the most important. They are the first lyrics you hear on this entire album, and that is because they hold so much weight.
We are preparing the way, in our hearts for the glory of God.
John the Baptist was a man who helped prepare the way for Jesus to come onto the scene. He had quite the job in front of him; one where he had to clear a path, in what seemed to be, a wilderness of sin and ungodliness.
I remember the one (and only) time I cut down a Christmas tree. It was honestly one of the most frustrating experiences. The only thing that made it bearable was the company. We picked a tree that was too heavy, too tall (21ft.), and all we had was a handsaw. It took us around three hours to make that tree fall, which we then had to drag nearly a quarter mile to the trailer. Then with our remaining will-power and strength, lift this beast of a tree onto the trailer. Once it was strapped down we began the two-hour trip back home. To top this whole experience off, when we finally set the tree up - it looked quite horrendous. Needless to say, it wasn’t necessarily a morale-boosting experience.
But if that’s how much effort it took to clear out one tree… I can’t even imagine clearing a path in the wilderness, much less a wilderness of sin. It would take discipline, intentionality, and a manageable pace.
This song is a missional call. If we really have Jesus living on the inside of us, that means we are carriers of the Kingdom here on earth. If the same power that conquered the grave really lives in me, it’s not so that I can just sit and sour - it is so that I can go into the world and bring the Kingdom to the marginalized. Holy Spirit empowers us as witnesses for Christ. As we discipline ourselves to clear out our hearts of any ‘wilderness’ (sin) that we hold on to, we are able to fill that space with more of God. This same man, John the Baptist, said, “I must decrease so that he may increase.”
As you go throughout your day, I pray that this song blesses you and challenges you to take the Good News of Jesus farther than it went yesterday.
FULL LYRICSVERSE 1
We are preparing the way
In our hearts
For the glory of God
Oh, from the old to the young
Pour down like rain
You’ve set us apart
Here in Your presence we stand
Full of faith
With a song in our hearts
Oh, that Your Kingdom has come
And Your will be done
Here and now
Let Your fire fall and stay
Spirit, come and have Your way
Let Your glory fill this place
Spirit, come and have Your way
For the broken, poor in spirit
We are ready and take heart to be Your witness
For the widow, for the orphan
Show Your presence here and always go before us
God of Glory, whose Name is matchless
Everything You are is all we've ever needed
Holy Spirit, awesome in power
Shake the atmosphere and fill us with revival
