“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal Spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 NLT

The word “renew” is used when something is restored or refreshed. Extended use overtime, without rest, mistreatment, internal damage, or the aging process, are all reasons for that restoration. I don’t know about you, but when I have something that is broken or unusable, I’m likely to throw it away or sell it because I’m not willing to take the time, energy or my resources to have the item refurbished. We live in a world of instant gratification. We would rather buy something new, or to save money, we buy it refurbished (oh the irony.)

I can’t help but look at my own life and wonder how many times I have desired things to be a certain way or had expectations of others to create my own happiness and feelings of value or self worth. The need for attention, affirmation, or approval from people can be exhausting. It can cause burnout, paranoia, frustration, bitterness and resentment to take hold. It’s absolutely numbing. Why do we do this to ourselves?  I have, many times, overextended myself to do things in my own strength, instead of allowing the power of Holy Spirit to work through me as a yielded vessel.

We can appear outwardly refreshed, but internally we are damaged, broken, and tired. The good news is that Jesus came to refurbish and reestablish the parts of us that need renewal. The Bible clearly tells us that the enemy is out to destroy us. He wants to overextend us, to cause us to be weary and weighed down with burdens and fears. The good news is that Jesus came to break those chains over our lives so that we can live a life of freedom and abundance.

In Isaiah 40:31, the Word says, “But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”

I recall a time, not all that long ago, when I was feeling a bit old and irrelevant in the giftings God had placed within me. I didn’t feel like I fit into a team where the median age was 21, and I am…older, way older. I was tired and thought my gift was no longer relevant to the church body. That’s when I realized that I needed to go back to the Potter’s wheel to be refurbished. It was during that time that I began to seek God so that I could be the woman He intended for me in this season of life. I purposed in my heart to remain teachable and to learn from those younger than me. My heart and emotions shifted. I began to have a greater understanding of how Holy Spirit can work within us and create in us a fire of desire for more of Him. I began sharing wisdom, lending support, and loving more. I didn’t lose my gift, I began to fine tune it. As a result, I walked into a new level of leadership, and even gained a new name, “Mama Ang”. Day by day, God renews my heart and my spirit as He reignites a passion within me for more of Him. The creator of Earth and its stars created you and I. We are His, and He is always faithful and able to Renew Us.

Author of the life that’s in us

You’re more than able to renew

Light to the hurting and lost

You’re ever shining for all to see

Giver of the grace that we seek

You’re more than willing to cover all

Faithful and true to Your Word

You’ve never failed us, You never will

You’ve never failed us, You never will

Renew us

Holy Spirit working in us

Heal our hearts and then consume us with

Your Holy Fire

Created earth and its stars

Create in us, Lord, a clean heart

Defender strong through the night

You give us courage, You give us strength

You give us courage, You give us strength

To Him who sits on the Throne

Holy, holy, hallelujah to our God

The God of Heaven above

We sing glory, hallelujah
